Every animal, even in the wild, needs a place to feel secure. Providing your dog a crate will minimize behavioral problems such as excessive barking and chewing on electrical cords and furniture. You can use the crate to teach them a schedule to relieve themselves. If they can depend on you to take them outside or to the proper place for relief on a regular basis, they won't mess the crate up. They will feel safe and secure, thereby feeling happier and confident. Do you have a new puppy but don't know how to crate train it? 1. Be sure the crate is large enough so he (or she) can stand up, turn around, or lay down in it. 2. Lay a soft cushion in it. If possible add something in the crate which has the mother's scent on it so he will feel comfortable and safe. 3. Put a soft toy or a treat in the crate away from the door. 4. Place the crate somewhere where it will be out of the way, but easily accessible for the puppy to get to you. 5. Be sure to remove the puppy's collar before you close the crate to avoid any possiblity of choking. 6. Have a water dispenser attached to the crate if you plan to leave him in there for a long period of time in case he gets thirsty while he's locked up. 7. When you want the puppy to go into the crate, say "crate" or something that pertains only to the crate. If a treat is needed to get him in the crate, place one inside away from the door. Give praise when he enters the crate. 8. Do not use the crate for punishment because he will not want to go in there on his own. He will think that everytime you put him in there he is being punished. 9. Lock him in the crate for short periods of time for the first few weeks and leave the house. When you return home, let him out immediately. 10. Leave your puppy a chew toy or something he likes that will not break or cannot swallow. 11. As soon as you let the puppy out of the crate, take him outside to do his business. The younger the puppy, the more frequently hewill need to relieve himself. 12. When you let the puppy out of the crate, praise it gently, put its collar on, leash it, and take it outside. Following these simple steps will be beneficial to you and your puppy.
