Collars and leashes are important for every dog owner.  Even if you prefer to carry your little dog in a bag, the dog will occasionally need to relieve himself.  If you use a stroller, you still need to let the dog out periodically when nature is expected to call.  There is no way to get around owning a collar and leash.  It is a must for every dog you own.

The most important thing to remember when choosing a collar is to get one that fits properly, and can adjust as your puppy grows.  Make sure the collar is not tight, nor too loose because dogs do slip out of collars easily.  To find the proper fit, place two fingers between the dog's neck and the collar.  It should not be looser than that.  Do not get a collar that is too heavy, either.  Check the dog's neck periodically to check for redness or hair loss after removing the collar.

Be sure the collar has a place for an identification tag that has your name, address, and most importantly, your phone number.  We all know that whoever finds your dog is not going to mail him to you, so the phone number is the most important info for the tag.  The dog's name would also be good to inscribe on the tag so the finder can call him by name and help the dog feel less traumatized.

There are many different types of collars:

- Buckles collars are a good choice for most dogs.  They come in all sizes and in a variety of materials and colors.

- Nylon collars are water resistant, and are durable and washable, and also some in many colors.  There are leashes made to match this type of collar.

- Leather collars are durable and long lasting.  Rolled leather collars are designed for long coats and keep the hair from lying flat against the coat.

- Training collars also known as choke chains and pinch collars are only meant for training.  They should not be used as an everyday collar.  Their specific purpose is they tighten when the trainer is correcting the dog during a training session.   Only trainers should use training collars.

- Harnesses are normally used for certain types of dogs that have a very delicate neck.  The harness is placed around the chest and ribcage so the dog cannot choke.  They're good for walking dogs that tend to pull while being walked.

Leashes also come in different styles and choosing one is a matter of preference.

- Nylon leashes are durable and washable, and match the nylon collars nicely.  Most owners who get the nylon collar will also get a matching leash.

- Leather leashes are durable and long lasting.  They soften with use and are easier to grip.

- Retractable leashes do just that, they can be retracted when you want your dog closer to you.  You can control how little or how much length to allow your dog with the touch of one button.  They store easily in a plastic casing which also doubles as the handle.

- Cotton webbed leashes are washable, economical, and easy on your hands.  They come in a variety of lengths.

We hope this helped explain the various choices you have when buying a collar and leash for your precious one.
